BURN IT DOWN – The Dead Daisies

Spitfire Music/SPV

Released: April 2018

Since they emerged on to the music scene in 2013, The Dead Daisies have built a bit of a reputation for themselves as a hard hitting, heavy duty rock supergroup of sorts, with a rotating line-up of some of the best hard rock musicians from around the globe. The line-up on this album is John Corabi on lead vocals, Doug Aldrich and David Lowy on guitars, Marco Mendoza on bass and backing vocals and Deen Castronovo on drums and backing vocals.

Recorded in Nashville and produced by Marti Frederiksen, ‘Burn it Down’ is the fourth studio album from The Dead Daisies and it pretty much cements that reputation. This album bites hard from the opening riffs of ‘Resurrected’ through to the final track, a cover of The Beatles’ ‘Revolution’, with full on, hardcore rock ‘n’ roll; the exception being my personal favourite (along with ‘Judgement Day’), the much softer ‘Set Me Free’.

‘Revolution’ is one of two covers included on this album; the other being the Jagger/Richards penned ‘Bitch’. I have always been of the opinion that it is pointless to cover another band’s music – particularly the likes of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones – unless you can improve on it. Nobody wants to hear a sloppy cover version of a Beatles or Stones song, so I was pleasantly surprised to hear The Daisies beefed up cover of The Stones’ ‘Bitch’ and I’m actually loving the guitars on ‘Revolution’.

There is an underlying theme to ‘Burn it Down’, with song titles like ‘Resurrected’, ‘Rise Up’, the title track ‘Burn it Down’, ‘Judgement Day’ and ‘What Goes Around’.  There is an atmosphere of karmic energy about this album; that whole ‘Phoenix rising from the ashes’ thing and the more I listen to it, the more that energy grabs hold of me.

The Dead Daisies are currently undertaking yet another massive tour which will take them through the U.K., Europe, Japan and the U.S.

‘Burn it Down’ is out now through Spitfire Music/SPV.
