By The C has continued to deliver cream of the crop artists to the great Australian outdoors, and these six GIANTS will be another crowd pleaser featuring: ICEHOUSE, James Reyne, Pete Murray, Baby Animals, Killing Heidi and Motor Ace. All performing live at Glenelg Beach, Adelaide on Saturday February 13th, 2021.
ICEHOUSE was formed by Iva Davies and is one of those bands which has managed to transcend age groups with a career spanning 40 years. Generations of music lovers have been brought up with hits such as Crazy, Electric Blue, We Can Get Together, Great Southern Land, Hey Little Girl and Man Of Colours to name a few. ICEHOUSE has sold over three million albums locally, more than nine million internationally and has achieved 28 platinum album sales in Australasia. The band had eight Top 10 albums and more than 30 Top 40 singles. ICEHOUSE and Iva Davies have won many awards including the Countdown Award for the Most Popular Male Performer and ARIA Awards for the Best Album and Highest Selling Album for Man of Colours. The band was inducted in the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006. In June 2013, Iva was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for ‘significant service to the music and entertainment industry’ as a songwriter and performer, and to the community. ICEHOUSE celebrated the 40th anniversary of their debut album, Flowers, this year and released a new live album ICEHOUSE Plays Flowers recorded in February 2020.
James Reyne has a celebrated history, with 19 top-40 hits throughout his career – nine solo, seven with Australian Crawl, and three with Company Of Strangers. In 1996, James Reyne was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, honouring his prestigious 40+ year career. Four decades after the release of his first album, James Reyne remains as indomitable as ever. In July he released his 12th studio album, Toon Town Lullaby, his wry observations and wordplay razor-sharp across the 10 tracks, reaffirming his status as one of Australia’s finest lyricists.
The hits have been flowing for James Reyne for more than 40 years. Toon Town Lullaby coincides with the 40th anniversary of Australian Crawl’s debut album, The Boys Light Up. As the late-great critic Ed Nimmervoll observed, James’ voice is “as familiar to us as the taste of Vegemite, as essentially Australian”. James is not afraid to revisit the past every now and then and share some personal memories. Toon Town Lullaby includes a heartfelt tribute to his best mate Brad Robinson, ‘The Tallest Man I Ever Knew’. James and Brad went to school together and went on to form Australian Crawl. “It’s a very personal song,” James says. “There are a few in-jokes in there that only Brad would get.”
One of Australia’s most loved singer songwriters, Pete Murray, is the quiet achiever of Australian music. He is committed to constantly growing and evolving as an artist and gets a thrill from offering fans new and exciting material with each release. His debut album, the roots/rock infused Feeler released in 2003, sold 6 x platinum in Australia (450,000 copies) and earned 12 ARIA Award nominations. Feeler eventually spent over two and a half years in the Top 100. The acclaimed album spawned his classic So Beautiful which went on to become the Most Performed Australian Song of the Year. In late 2005 his sophomore album, See The Sun debuted at No.1 in Australia. The first single Better Days became a No. 1 airplay track while Opportunity became the biggest song of 2006, earning the most played track at Australian radio. Pete Murray is one of few artists with over 1 million album sales under his belt and earlier this year released a brand-new single, Found My Place and his new EP, The Night.
Since their first hit Early Warning released in 1991, Baby Animals have led an extraordinary career in Australian and international music, assembling an impressive discography spanning almost three decades. In May 2019, they returned to the road to celebrate their 30th anniversary, releasing their ‘Greatest Hits’ compilation and new single How Do I Make You, a cover of the Linda Ronstadt classic.
In their early years, Baby Animals toured the United States with acts such as Van Halen and Robert Plant, with early successes including a No. 1 debut album that beat Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ on the charts for six weeks. Since then it has been nothing but glory for the hard rocking Australian four-piece, boasting a trio of ARIA awards including Best Album, Best Debut Album, and Best Debut Single, in addition to their self-titled Baby Animals debut having gone eight-times platinum. They were voted one of the Top 25 albums of 1992 by Kerrang!, going on to perform ‘Painless’ on ‘Late Night With David Letterman’.
Killing Heidi are officially forever. Twenty years ago, when the disarming folk-pop of Kettle launched Ella and Jesse Hooper into high radio rotation, it was something neither expected. But tour after tour, the Violet Town siblings are finding their explosive power pop more entrenched in the Oz rock pantheon.
There’s a whole generation that doesn’t need reminding that the early ’00s belonged to Killing Heidi. Weir hit No. 2 and Mascara No. 14 in Triple J’s Hottest 100. Debut album Reflector won four major ARIA awards and sold 4 times platinum as Ella and Jesse took out the prestigious APRA Songwriters of the Year award in 2001. After a fruitful decade of diverse solo and duo pursuits, the pair reignited the flame for the 20th anniversary of Queenscliff Music Festival in 2016. In 2018, they kicked it up another gear with a SOLD OUT capital cities tour backed by Live Nation and followed by an extensive regional run of shows. A year later, they hooked up for a co-headlining national tour with ’90s rock icons, Baby Animals. Summer 2020 will see Killing Heidi return for a monster 23 dates across every state & territory of Australia.
Motor Ace’s 2001 debut album Five Star Laundry went gold in Australia within weeks of release. What followed was an exhaustive touring and promo schedule, which included unbelievable support slots alongside Foo Fighters, Oasis and Blink-182. It was sold out shows every night, and absolute domination on the airwaves; Motor Ace were a staple in consecutive triple j Hottest 100 countdowns, and a mainstay on the ARIA charts. Their timely sophomore album Shoot This was released in 2002 to abundant critical acclaim. It spawned lead single Carry On that held the coveted No. 1 most played song on Australian airwaves for 8 weeks in a row, and Shoot This, debuting at No. 1 on the charts and achieving gold sales on release. The band gave limited live performances in 2018 and 2019 with sold out shows full of thrilled fans. With next March being the 20th anniversary of their debut, the three 2021 By The C shows the band are performing at will be special!
