Bluesfest Touring presents a rare opportunity to enjoy the classic Stax Records repertoire as performed by the man who wrote so many of the songs; the one and only Booker T! Together with his incredible backing singers and a horn section, they will honour some of the greatest soul classics from the legendary Stax Records label including ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ (Otis Redding), ‘Mr Big Stuff’ (Jean Knight), ‘Gee Whiz’ (Carla Thomas),‘Respect’ (Otis Redding/ Aretha Franklin), ‘Hold On I’m Comin’ (Sam & Dave) and ‘When Something Is Wrong With My Baby’ (Sam & Dave). Dubbed the “Duchess of Coolsville” by Time magazine, Rickie Lee Jones’ hits Chuck E’s in Love and Young Blood topped the charts and helped to define the boho rock sound of the late 70s. She will bring her distinct mix of jazz, rock and what has come to be known as ‘confessional’ performances to Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Cairns in April.

In 2016 Gregory Porter’s sold out concerts created a huge buzz and received glowing reviews. You will kick yourself if you miss his Sydney and Melbourne shows in 2017.

Heralded as one of the most exciting new voices in soul music, Laura Mvula is a classically trained vocalist and singer-songwriter. She has been compared to the likes of Nina Simone and caught the attention of her musical heroes Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Prince whilst performing at the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 2016. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane can look forward to her powerful concerts in mid April 2017.

Known for his energetic strumming on the ukulele, Jake Shimabukuro’s performances incorporate elements of thoughtful, sophisticated arrangement to spontaneous, improvised passages. In addition to his original compositions, his repertoire includes Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’ and Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’. Shimabukuro will astound audiences in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Rock and Roll Hall of inductee Bonnie Raitt is more than a best-selling artist, respected guitarist, expressive singer and accomplished songwriter….she has become an institution in American Music. She has added a stop in Brisbane to her national tour.

Booker more recently won back to back Grammy awards in the category Best Pop Instrumental Album for his 2011 release The Road From Memphis where he is backed by hip-hop royalty The Roots and for the 2009 album Potato Hole which features guests Neil Young and Drive By Truckers.  Booker’s current album Sound The Alarm (Stax/Concord) is critically acclaimed and features collaborations with some of the finest talents in modern soul and R&B including Mayer Hawthorne, Anthony Hamilton, Vintage Trouble, Estelle, Gary Clark, Jr., Luke James and more.

“This was one of those nights when live music becomes really live, when the bond between performer and audience pushes everyone further than expected.” – Telegraph.co.uk

“Count on Rickie Lee Jones to always burn. Soft or quiet, fast or slow, the woman’s soul has such a depth of feeling that everything she does actually means something.” – themortonreport.com

Dubbed the “Duchess of Coolsville” by Time magazine, Rickie Lee Jones’ hits Chuck E’s in Love and Young Blood topped the charts and helped to define the boho rock sound of the late 70s. The two-time Grammy winner exploded onto the pop scene in 1979 and has made a career of fearlessly experimenting with her sound and persona over 15 critically acclaimed albums. Rickie is both a character in the songs and the songwriter singing, defying convention with her sometimes brazen sexuality and the mixed bag of jazz, rock and what has come to be known as ‘confessional’ songwriter performances.

Her latest album The Other Side of Desire was written and recorded in the city of New Orleans, where Jones lives.

Gregory Porter

“I try to think of another vocalist from any era whose singing carries such a tide of magnanimity, and I can’t. Muddy Waters and Omara Portuondo might be contenders. Truly great artists, in other words, and Porter deserves to be discussed in that league.” – The Sydney Morning Herald

It’s the combination of that massively authoritative voice and the touchingly confessional nature of his songs that has proved irresistible.” – telegraph.co.uk

Gregory Porter, the Grammy winning Jazz, Soul, and Gospel singer, will return to Australia after two sell-out dates in his first ever Australian tour!

Celebrating Take Me To The Alley (2016), the much-anticipated follow-up to his sensational 2013 Blue Note debut Liquid Spirit; the charismatic Californian will be here to breathe life, vitality, fun, and excitement into the musical genres he has loved from boyhood; ever since Nat “King” Cole entered his heart.
