“It’s fast becoming one of the leading concert series in Australia, with music and animal lovers descending on Sydney’s Taronga Zoo for some of the best summer concerts you’ll see anywhere.” Tone Deaf
“It has to be one of the best live venues in Australia – a stage in the heart of Taronga Zoo, best accessed by ferry, with a virtually unimpeded view of the harbour behind it.” The AU Review
The annual American Express Twilight at Taronga Summer Concert Series is a Sydney summer highlight, and in 2019 will feature live music across six weekends beginning on Friday February 1 until Saturday March 9 with a line-up for all ages.
Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Aloe Blacc will take to the Twilight stage on Thursday February 21, just a few months after performing at the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018. Experiencing global success with his breakout song ‘I Need a Dollar’, Blacc followed it up writing and singing on Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up’ – the massive hit went on to top the charts in more than 100 countries.
Opening the series is a double shot of 90s Oz rock indie nostalgia with You Am I and Magic Dirt both playing a set on Friday February 1. Also enjoying success in the 90s were The Whitlams, and they make a welcome return to the American Express Twilight at Taronga stage on Friday February 8.
We’ll be treated to the much loved pop-rock songs from the Hoodoo Gurus on Saturday February 9, while multi-instrumentalist Xavier Rudd will perform his sublime and soaring indie-folk on Friday February 15. Recently celebrating their 25-year anniversary, the folk sounds of The Waifs will follow on Saturday February 16.
After years away from the stage Do Re Mi will be another highlight on Friday March 1, followed on Saturday March 2 by indie folk-rock band The Paper Kites. Vera Blue’s recently released debut album blends her folk past with bold, electronic pop and she will play on Friday March 8, before the Comedy Gala on Saturday March 9, led by the Umbilical Brothers.
Rounding out the American Express Twilight at Taronga series are annual favourites Bjorn Again and James Morrison, who will play on Saturday February 2 and Saturday February 23 respectively.
Pre-sale tickets will be exclusively available to American Express customers on Tuesday 23 October from 11am for 48 hours, with the pre-sale for Twilight at Taronga members beginning at 11am on Tuesday October 25 – you can sign up now at twilightattaronga.org.au.
General public tickets are on sale at 11am on Friday October 26from twilightattaronga.org.au.
Framed by the picturesque Sydney Harbour skyline at dusk, the American Express Twilight at Taronga 2019 Summer Concert Series is one of the best live music events in Australia and is held on the lawns of Taronga Zoo’s unique natural amphitheatre.
Libby Hodgson, Marketing Director from Taronga Zoo said, “We look forward to Twilight at Taronga every year, and this year is no exception with American Express coming on board to present the series. Picture yourself with a drink in your hand, blissfully watching a Sydney Harbour sunset from Taronga Zoo while taking in some of the best in live music…it doesn’t get much better than that!”
In 2019 Twilight at Taronga is presented by The American Express Music Backers Program, an initiative committed to supporting the Australian music industry by giving music venues, businesses, artists and fans the opportunity to share in a grant program, valued at $1 million.
Naysla Edwards from American Express said, “We know Australians love music and attend more live gigs each year than sporting events. However, there has been a steady decline in the number of people going out to see live music so through our partnership with Twilight at Taronga, we’re thrilled to continue supporting the music industry by providing our Card Members and the public with exceptional music experiences and memories”.
All tickets to Twilight at Taronga are not just for a night of great music; shows can be enjoyed with a pre-ordered picnic hamper as you watch the sunset in a Chillazy chair, or food and drink can be purchased on the night from a variety of food trucks and on-site bars.
Each ticket also includes free public transport and a discounted same-day Zoo entry fee of $10 per adult and $5 per child.
As a not for profit organisation, all proceeds from Twilight at Taronga go back into Taronga’s ongoing conservation and research work, so they are concerts with a conscience. One such initiative is Litter Free Oceans, which aims to protect our marine life and oceans. The majority of litter comes from single use items, but fortunately there are reusable alternatives to almost every disposable product. Take action now and choose to reuse.
Join us for a concert – or two – and make the most of a Sydney summer with a sunset picnic and live music for all ages as you experience the after-hours environment of Taronga Zoo!
