In January The NSW Government and City of Sydney unveiled a new COVID-safe, pop-up outdoor performance venue and concert series. Brought to you by the team at Sydney Festival, led by Artistic Director Olivia Ansell and programmed by Chris Twite, Sunset Piazza – an Italo-themed summer pop-up stage – is a series of performances spanning contemporary pop, comedy, hip hop and indie rock from 28 January to 21 of March, Tickets to all events only $25.
A number of the previously announced shows sold out in record time. We are pleased to announce new seats have been announced for all, giving a second chance to those fans who previously missed out.
“The Sydney Festival is thrilled to curate this authentic summer program, collaborating with the City of Sydney and NSW Government to invite Sydneysiders back to the CBD in a COVID safe environment. ‘Sunset Piazza’ is reigniting Sydney’s night-time economy, offering $25 tickets to a first-class line-up of Australian talent, while also employing hundreds of artists and crew, which is another important step towards industry recovery,” said Sydney Festival Artistic Director Olivia Ansell.
Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres said Sunset Piazza was reinvigorating Sydney’s twilight following the challenges of COVID-19.
“The NSW Government, in partnership with the City of Sydney, is investing in our Harbour City to bring visitors and locals back to our CBD,” Mr Ayres said. “Sunset Piazza brings Sydney to life after dark with great food, great drinks and most importantly great entertainment. There’s something for everyone and I really encourage people to get out and enjoy their summer nights.”
Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore said the Sunset Piazza has already been a great success.
“When we launched Sunset Piazza in late January, jazz musician James Morrison spoke about how difficult 2020 was for artists and how special it will be to perform for a live audience again,” the Lord Mayor said.
“I am so pleased that together with the NSW Government and Sydney Festival we can create a stage for so many of Australia’s talented artists and comedians and provide audiences with a COVID-safe way to enjoy them again.”
NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the Sunset Piazza was one of many initiatives to come out of the NSW Government’s Summer Summit.
“These concerts and performances are breathing life back into the city centre and putting some of our best culture on stage after too long away,” Mr Perrottet said. “Sunset Piazza has been a hit, with tickets selling fast. This second tranche, with so many great acts, really shows the appetite Sydneysiders and visitors have for the world-class entertainment on offer.”
Located at Cathedral Square opposite Hyde Park, Sunset Piazza is a key outcome from the NSW Government’s Summer Summit and part of the City of Sydney’s Al Fresco City initiative – a $20 million revitalisation project aimed at transforming the city into an outdoor cultural experience. Replete with artisan providores – serving everything from crostino to cannoli – attendees can enjoy a pre-show aperitivo and sip on a spritz or a Negroni as they settle in for a selection of Sydney’s best DJs, pre-show.
Sunset Piazza is an invitation to Sydneysiders to come out and safely celebrate the Harbour City this summer. With performances across 32 nights, we’ve got your culture covered, but with limited tickets per performance, tickets will sell out. All events will follow COVID-safe regulations and guests are reminded to follow the latest NSW Health advice regarding social distancing, hygiene and staying home if unwell.
