Eric Burdon and The Animals
Eric Burdon’s lengthy recording career began in Newcastle, England, where he first interpreted songs of his idols Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Josh White, Brownie McGee, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Reed. Burdon and The Animals quickly gained notoriety as Britain’s best R&B band, selected by the pirate radio station Radio Caroline as the feature for their first broadcast to the U.S., and were a part of the first live R&B recording in the U.K., when they joined Sonny Boy Williamson at the now famous Club A-Go-Go in Newcastle, U.K.
This raw performance was followed by a more polished outing when they appeared with Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Little Richard in 1964 in the Granada TV concert feature ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’. Shortly thereafter, Eric Burdon and The Animals took the world by storm when they recorded and released an electrified version of the traditional folk song, The House Of The Rising Sun.
