HELPING FEED THOSE IN NEED – TUESDAY 6 SEPTEMBER, 2016

Sacred Heart Mission is excited to announce that Ross Wilson, Judith Lucy, Red Symons, Ella Hooper, Paul Dempsey, Jimeoin, The Rebelles, Deborah Conway with Clare Bowditch and Maddy and Memphis Kelly, and Jeff Green, will join Russell Morris, Kutcha Edwards, Shane Howard, Olympia, Bob Downe, The Meltdown, Rebecca Barnard and Billy Miller with the Caravan Choir and Melbourne Tap for its special annual fundraiser, Heart of St Kilda Concert, at the Palais Theatre, St Kilda on Tuesday 6 September.

Now in its ninth year, this highlight of the Melbourne live music and comedy calendar attracts Australia’s finest musicians and comedians. The show will once again be MC’ed by Brian Nankervis.
Events coordinator Sara Harrington said the artists joining the Heart of St Kilda Concert line-up are donating their time to a cause that last year raised a whopping $79,000 for the Mission’s Meals Program to feed nearly 20,000 people in need.

The Mission serves over 160,000 meals each year out of its dining hall in Grey St, St Kilda and proceeds from this year’s concert will continue this inspirational work.

Larry Ponting, Wal Bishop OAM, Palais Theatre CEO Neil Croker and St Kilda local and performer Brian Nankervis have been curating and producing the Heart of St Kilda Concert from the very beginning. Their vision was to create an event to support the work of the Sacred Heart Mission, a vital service within the community. It is a totally unique, celebratory night of entertainment for the whole family, featuring a wide variety of high profile and up and coming artists who are helping to raise funds for a vital cause.
Performers at the 2016 Heart of St Kilda Concert include:

Ross Wilson: in a career that spans over 40 years, Ross Wilson is one of Australia’s most respected rock musicians. From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock, as a solo artist or as a songwriter of classics such as Eagle Rock, Cool World and A Touch of Paradise, Wilson has had continued musical success. In 2016 he continues to tour with his band, The Peaceniks, playing as a headline act at many Australian rock music festivals.

Ella Hooper: singer and songwriter Ella Hooper burst on the Australian music scene in 1996 as teenage front woman of rock group Killing Heidi, for which she won multiple ARIA awards and was awarded the prestigious APRA songwriter of the year in 2001 together with her brother, Jesse Hooper. After the band broke up Jesse and Ella went on to form The Verses and they performed acoustic gigs at smaller venues across Australia. In July this year Ella released a double EP, Venom/New Magic, which follows her 2014 debut album In Tongues.

Russell Morris: over the past five years Russell has released a trilogy of albums infused with Australian stories and the second of these, Van Dieman’s Land, has been the highest charting album of Russell’s 50-year career to date, debuting at number four on the overall ARIA charts. His musical journey began in Melbourne in the 1960s with the smash hit The Real Thing. More hits followed and in 2008 he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

Paul Dempsey: is known to most as the singer, guitarist and principal songwriter of highly successful Australian band, Something for Kate. Dempsey has so far released six platinum and gold records with Something for Kate along with a double album of B-sides and a greatest hits collection, selling over half a million records in Australia. During this time Dempsey has also consistently played solo shows and toured in solo mode when not busy with Something for Kate as well as producing records for other artists.

Kutcha Edwards: singer/songwriter Kutcha Edwards released his first solo work Cooinda in 2002 after touring
nationally and internationally as lead vocalist with Koori rock bands Watbalimba and Blackfire. Kutcha calls his most recent work Blak & Blu his “Bidgee music” – his own unique soulful style with influences from his Mutti Mutti country on the Murrumbidgee River of NSW.

Judith Lucy: one of Australia’s most popular stand-up comedians, Judith Lucy is also a best-selling author, and her work in television and film and her sell-out national tours have made her a household name. In 2016, Lucy has continued to tour her Helpmann Award-winning show Ask No Questions of the Moth. She has sold out countless theatrical runs in Australia and has taken her shows to Montreal, Edinburgh and London’s West End.

Shane Howard: as one of Australia’s most influential songwriters, Shane Howard’s work has been recorded by artists as diverse as Ireland’s Mary Black and Australia’s John Farnham and Troy Cassar-Daley. Shane has spent much of his musical life working with Indigenous musicians, as well as touring Ireland and forging Irish-Australian connections. His anthemic song, Solid Rock, from the 1982 album Spirit of Place, was recorded with his band, Goanna. Shane has released 13 solo albums, including his most recent, Deeper South.

Jeff Green: Award-winning British comedian Jeff Green first hit the stage in Australia at the 1996 Melbourne
International Comedy Festival. Amongst his many Australian TV credits are two stand-up specials on ABC 1, Spicks and Specks (ABC), Good News Week (Ten) as well as numerous appearances on the Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala (Ten). Now an Australian resident, Jeff is hugely in demand in the UK, Europe and Asia. Highlights include sold-out shows at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe, a solo West-End season and three full length UK TV comedy specials plus a BBC Radio 2 comedy series attracting over 3 million listeners.

Bob Downe: Bob Downe is one of Australia’s most loved and enduring comedy characters, the creation of journalist, comedian, actor and broadcaster Mark Trevorrow. Created in 1984 at the Glebe Food Fair, Bob has toured the world as the Prince of Polyester ever since – winning a Glasgow Mayfest Award (1994), consecutive Melbourne Green Room Awards for Best Cabaret Artiste (1999 & 2000), and starring in five sellout Sydney Opera House seasons and 17 Edinburgh Fringe festivals. In 2013 he was presented with another Green Room Award, for Lifetime Achievement in Cabaret. Whilst Bob has appeared on numerous Australian TV shows, Mark has established a significant parallel career singing, acting and broadcasting as himself with projects for ABC TV and Foxtel, including a memorable turn as ‘Darryl’ the menswear salesman in Kath & Kim (ABC)

The Rebelles: are 15 wondrous women serving up girl group greatness from the early sixties in pitch perfect, three part harmonies. With punk energy, harmonic panache and a bad-but-not-evil glint, The Rebelles have developed a reputation as one band you simply have to see.

Don’t miss out on this huge night of entertainment and give a helping hand to this great cause.
