RUMOUR HAS IT
ADELE – HER LIFE AND SONGS
“Fabulously entertaining” “The next best thing to seeing Adele live” THE COURIER MAIL AUSTRALIAN STAGE ‘’Naomi Price. A raucous & rollicking performance that would make Adele proud.’’
Following standing ovations across the country including acclaimed seasons at Sydney Opera House and Queensland Theatre Company, the little red company’s celebrated original production Rumour Has It returns to NSW 22 & 23 July for an exclusive season at Lismore City Hall.
Starring Australian stage siren Naomi Price, Rumour Has It charts the incredible rise of THE blockbuster soul sensation of the modern age live on stage in story and song, with all the upfront British wit and heart-stopping tunes that have made Adele the highest-selling recording artist of the 21st Century.
Hear Adele’s deliciously frank life story come alive in the words of this world class stage performer, as seven of Australia’s finest musicians deliver the greatest hits from a mega-platinum catalogue, including Hello, Rolling in the Deep, Someone Like You and the Oscar-winning Skyfall.
“Adele is undoubtedly one of the greatest songwriters and storytellers of our generation,” 31-year-old Price says of the production’s origins.
“The idea for our show started in 2012 with a simple question: who is this man who shattered Adele’s heart and inspired her mega-platinum album 21? Our early research returned quite satirical material, and while the show is absolutely full of profanities and provocative quips, we’ve uncovered much more poignancy journeying behind the glossy veneer of the ‘popstar’.”
Best known to television audiences as Ricky Martin’s leading lady on The Voice Australia 2015, Price also has extensive live theatre experience including acclaimed performances in musicals Ladies in Black (Queensland Theatre Company/Melbourne Theatre Company), Jesus Christ Superstar (QPAC/Harvest Rain) and The Last 5 Years (Oscar Theatre Company), and new Australian works The Tragedy of King Richard III (La Boite Theatre Company), Gloria (Queensland Theatre Company) and Wrecking Ball (the little red company).
But it’s transforming into London tearaway Adele that Price feels most at home.
“I liken performing as Adele to putting on your favourite pair of jeans: it’s tried and tested and in it I feel like I can conquer the world,” Price says.
“The show is based on the real Adele Adkins, but we have obviously taken some creative license with certain aspects.I suppose my Adele is sharper-tongued than the real life Adele comes across. And probably drinks more onstage!
“I like to play with giving people what they want from an Adele show, but also delivering things they would never expect. It gets interesting when the character of Adele gets muddied with me as a person – there are similarities other than being curvy redheads from England! I like to think of it as an examination of her life; factual and fictional.”
Rumour Has It has enjoyed meteoric success since its premiere as a 15-minute stand-up set in 2012, winning the coveted Matilda Award for Best Musical or Cabaret and cementing Price’s position as one of Australia’s most charming leading ladies.
“We’re absolutely thrilled that audiences have connected so enthusiastically with this show,” Price says.
“What started out as a laugh over wine between two friends has developed and matured into a wicked piece of theatre that we are exceptionally proud of. We’ve played some of the most iconic venues and companies in the country, including Sydney Opera House, Adelaide Cabaret Festival and Queensland Theatre Company. And it feels like this is just the beginning.”
