The Black Sorrows who are spearheaded by Joe Camilleri, an undisputed icon of Australian music, today release The Quintessential Black Sorrows. They have been at the forefront of the music scene for decades and are thrilled to celebrate 40 plus years in the making with this double album.
The Black Sorrows have arguably written some of the country’s most classic songs like Harley & Rose, Chained To The Wheel, Hold On To Me and Never Let Me Go, tracks that appear on this release and have helped shape Australian radio. The album also moves forward with newer standouts like City Of Soul, Crazy Look, Saint Georges Road and For Your Love, revealing a band still hungry to write, record, and perform with power and purpose. At the heart of The Black Sorrows’ sound is the enduring songwriting partnership of Camilleri and lyricist Nick Smith that’s lasted over 40 years. In 2024, Nick and Joe were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Their songs walk the line between personal and universal, streetwise and poetic.
The Black Sorrows in one form or another, have not stopped recording or performing since Joe formed the band in 1984. They have toured Europe numerous times, there have been multi-platinum albums, collectively sales of over three million records worldwide, ARIA Awards & Nominations, and Hall of Fame honours.
To celebrate The Quintessential Black Sorrows, the band is currently embarking on a nation-wide tour, and shows are selling fast. They are renowned for their high-energy live performance and infectious raw, rootsy rhythms. Under the leadership of the charismatic music legend, Joe Camilleri, The Black Sorrows have evolved into one of the most sophisticated ensembles in the country.
The Quintessential Black Sorrows is a handpicked journey through the soul, grit and timeless genre-defying songwriting fire that has made them one of Australia’s most respected bands. Curated by Joe Camilleri, the double album spans decades and celebrates the songwriting partnership of him and Nick, as well as the musicians who have made the journey. The collection of songs commemorates the past, but more than that, it proves The Sorrows are still writing their best chapter.
