Bred on the mean streets of Detroitʼs east side, and favouring short hair and short songs, they were inspired by the British punk invasion and their hometown rock scene. Nearly four decades later they are still regarded as having created some of the most influential and beloved rock and roll of all time, including the timeless pop-rock tome of 1980, “What I Like About You”, which reached No. 2 in Australia, 1983’s “Talking In Your Sleep” which peaked at No. 14, “Rock You Up”, and “One In A Million”.
This October and November, The Romantics return to our shores for the first time in more than 20 years. Kicking off with a Halloween night extravaganza at Sydney’s Factory Theatre on October 31, they will then head to Victoria for shows at Chelsea Heights Hotel on November 2 and Doncaster Shoppingtown Hotel on November 3, winding up with a massive Sunday afternoon show at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel on November 4.
Their musical credo, then and now, was a simple, joyful affirmation, epitomised by the “Hey!…uh-huh!” intro to “What I Like About You,” the unforgettable, high energy track that still bridges generations, times and musical genres.
The Romantics is comprised of original members Wally Palmar (vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica), Mike Skill (lead guitar, vocals) and Rich Cole (bass guitar, vocals), with Brad Elvis on drums and percussion since 2004.
Joining them on tour is acclaimed Australian new wave band Pseudo Echo. Responsible for smash hits such as “Beat For You”, “Don’t Go”, “Listening” and “Funky Town”, the band is as much a force now as it was back in the 80s, having just played the 2018 Red Hot Summer Tour to rave reviews.
