Dami Im has today released her brand new single ‘Pray’, from forthcoming album MY REALITY – it follows the endearing pop gems of the last 12 months, ‘Paper Dragon’ and ‘Lonely Cactus’.
Discussing the song, which she wrote with Audius (Delta’s Born To Try), Dami said:
“The day we wrote it I felt pretty crappy and I know a lot of people are in hopeless situations, we wanted to go deep and write something to express that. In the past I’ve steered away from that type of vibe in my songs, cheering people up. Sometimes it can sound corny and maybe that’s what people should think I sing about, whatever they associate Dami Im with. I played Pray to the people around me, even the non-religious people loved it and felt something, they connected with it. That was a good sign.”
‘Pray’ is a further taste of what’s to come from Dami’s sixth studio album, MY REALITY. It is the album she’s waited her whole career to make, seizing creative control and for the first time, writing or co-writing every track.
“A few years ago I wasn’t mature enough to steer my albums the way I wanted them to go. This is the dream album, it took a while but I’m so proud of it.”
MY REALITY’s collaborators range from One Above (Hilltop Hoods, Illy) to Andy Mak (Vera Blue, Tina Arena) to Konstantin Kersting (Tones And I, Spacey Jane). Most of the songs were written during the pandemic, meeting collaborators over Zoom rather than face to face.
Considered one of the country’s most gifted vocalists, MY REALITY also sees Dami push her voice in new directions.
“On this album I really enjoyed working with people whose work is different to what I normally do, and it makes you think about things differently.”
With highly personal lyrics that touch on everything from depression to moving out of your childhood home, MY REALITY also sees Dami mature as a songwriter.
“It was a really cathartic album to make, I felt like I was reading my own memoir back when I looked at the lyrics. It was very therapeutic.
“As humans we all have this need to express ourselves and share our experiences. With all of the songs I’m hoping they speak to people on some level and that they’re relatable. Ultimately, I want people to feel heard and understood.
“This album is about owning who I am. You shouldn’t shy away from the things people like about you. But you are who you are. Some parts on this record people might expect, some others show how much I’ve changed. With this album I’m just trying to be authentic in the way I know it, that’s my reality.”
After winning The X Factor in 2013, Dami has released four ARIA Top 10 albums and scored hits with Alive, Gladiator, Smile, Super Love and her Eurovision gamechanger Sound of Silence – scoring the highest placing of any Australian artist at the global music competition.
Signing with ABC Music in 2020, Dami has expanded her musical horizons with thrilling results.
Dami will launch ‘Pray’ with a special online live set for fans on Saturday night, then returns to our TV screens this Sunday night, as she stars as one of the contestants on the eagerly awaited series, Celebrity Masterchef Australia. Fans can tune in to 10 and 10 Play on demand at 7.30pm to see Dami put her cooking skills to the test, against a star studded line up!
