‘Top shelf Moss’ – The West Australian
‘This is his finest solo album’ – Stack Magazine
Australian guitar icon, celebrated writer and performer Ian Moss returns to the spotlight today (Friday) with the release of his brand new self-titled album.
Widely respected as one of Australia’s iconic musicians, Ian Moss delivers an unforgettable sound – not only as a telling soloist on guitar but especially with his silken voice, ringing with clarity and resonating with pure soul.
Put simply, Ian Moss – known as Mossy to his legion of fans – is part of Australian music’s soul.
Mossy has never been in a rush to release music. It comes from within. The time has to be right, and as he sings on the new album’s opening track and first radio play-listed single, ‘If Another Day (Love Rewards Its Own)’, “Out of sight, but never out of mind”.
Another of the many standout songs is the stunning soul ballad ‘Broadway’, which Mossy wrote for his son, Julian, and Don Walker’s piano punctuates ‘A Girl Like You’, which name-checks one of Chisel’s favourite haunts when they moved to Sydney in the ’70s. Mossy’s sublime playing – on his Fender electric and Maton acoustic – is as expressive as ever. “Sometimes the words are useless for what it is I’m trying to get across,” he confides in ‘Hold On (To What We Got)’.
Indeed, the landmark new album features songs almost entirely co-penned by Moss, save a poignant contribution titled ‘My Suffering’ by Chisel’s late, great Steve Prestwich, who passed away in 2011.
Of course, that underplays Mossy’s vocal – a superb instrument in its own right – as well as the powerful personal stories on this record. But Mossy’s finest work is all about feel. And it’s that feel that tells you everything you need to know.
There are a couple of other little nods to Cold Chisel but make no mistake, this is Ian Moss taking centre stage as he has done so successfully in the past, most notably with Matchbook. That debut solo album garnered Mossy Album of the Year at the 1990 ARIA Awards, spent three consecutive weeks at #1 (staying in the top 10 for a staggering 14 weeks) and went on to sell over 150,000 copies.
Matchbook has stood the test of time, and this new album will too.
Ian and band will be performing songs from the new album, and a wide selection of the big hitters from the Cold Chisel/Ian Moss songbooks as he takes to the highways of Australia to deliver it live.
