CHANGING FUTURES, WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS
HOST RICHARD STUBBS, ALONG WITH DARYL BRAITHWAITE, RUSSELL MORRIS AND
CHRIS WILSON BAND TOGETHER TO RAISE FUNDS FOR INTERPLAST
Some of Australia’s favourite musicians have joined together for a special evening in Melbourne to support medical charity Interplast. Daryl Braithwaite, Russell Morris and Chris Wilson, joined by host Richard Stubbs, will bring together a night of music and laughter at the Athenaeum this October. All proceeds raised from the evening’s entertainment will go to the Interplast charity – repairing bodies and rebuilding lives in the Asia Pacific region. Interplast sends teams of volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, physiotherapists and other medical staff to provide free life-changing surgery and medical training to 17 developing countries across the Asia Pacific region. Interplast has been providing this vital service for 35 years and during this time has taken part in more than 23,000 surgeries through 750 separate programs. In these countries, a lack of resources combined with limited training of medical personnel, means people with repairable conditions are often not treated fast or well enough, or in some cases not at all. It is Interplast’s hope that one day their services will no longer be needed. Interplast has far more requests then they are able to meet and far more volunteers than they can send. The only limitation is the need for more funding. Fundraising is vital in order for Interplast to meet the great demand for their services.
The line-up for the Changing Futures, with a little help from our Friends concert features some of the best in the business. Daryl Braithwaite is easily considered one of the best voices in the Australian music industry and has developed something of a cult following. From his early days in Sherbet, to his ground-breaking solo albums Edge and Rise, to name a few, Daryl has made an indelible mark on the history of Aussie music. There would be few music fans – of any age –who wouldn’t reveal in a live version of his hit The Horses and in recent years it’s not surprising that Daryl and his band have become festival favourites.
Russell Morris is the consummate musician – songwriter, psychedelic pop icon, bluesman. His 1970s hits made him one of the country’s most recognisable singer-songwriters – Wings of an Eagle, Sweet Sweet Love, That Girl That I Love and of course, The Real Thing. Fast forward to 2012 and Russell aptly demonstrated that any musician worth their salt gets better with age with the release of his #1 Sharkmouth. He firmly embedded himself as a premier bluesman with the first album in what was to become an acclaimed trilogy – Sharkmouth, Van Diemen’s Land and Red Dirt – Red Heart.
Chris Wilson is a multi-instrumentalist, effortlessly flipping between harmonica, saxophone and guitar. From the beginning in the Sole Twisters, to his acclaimed solo albums, he is revered by peers and critics alike. There are few people in the industry Chris hasn’t worked with, having performed and recorded with a wide range of legendary artists, such as Paul Kelly, Renee Geyer, Archie Roach, Hunters & Collectors and Harem Scarum to name a few. It’s not just Aussie artists either, he has also won the respect of international hitmakers like Tony Joe White, Charlie Musselwhite and Bob Dylan.
The evening’s host Richard Stubbs needs no introduction – a stalwart of the radio airwaves and a revered stand-up comedian within his own right, is a familiar face and voice for Melburnians. He is also an incredible performer, with sellout runs at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, as well as shows internationally in Montreal, New York, London and Los Angeles, among some locations. He also has an impressive TV resume, appearing on shows such as The Midday Show, Hey Hey It’s Saturday, Tonight Live and The Flying Doctors, to name a few.
